But the series' star, America Ferrera, is nowt short of the total opposite.
She's dressed as a frumpy brace-wearer for the tellybox, but her real-life red-carpet shots show America as some seriously hot totty.
So talk of the star feeling like an ugly duckling and identifying with her character her comes as a surprise.
She told News Of The World's Sunday mag: "I'd look in the mirror and weep, thinking I was too fat.
"I never saw a Latina woman with an average body on TV.
"I wanted to be one of Charlie's Angels but I couldn't fit into size-zero leather trousers.
"I was waiting to turn into a swan."
Well, her time has come. When's it Betty's turn?
