She was tipped for a loada awards and a duet with Pete Doherty.
But Amy Winehouse's night wasn't quite the success it should have been.
The troubled singer, who has undergone a very public battle with drug addiction over the past few months, picked up only one prize, for artist's choice, at the much-hyped ceremony.
On hearing that she'd won, Amy was kissed by husband Blake Fielder-Civil before heading to the podium looking unco-ordinated, and muttered "thanks" to the audience.
But she failed to make a proper acceptance speech, earning her boos from the expectant crowd.
And to make matters worse, 24-year-old Amy then slurred her way through a rendition of her hit single Back To Black.
Amy was outshone at the awards bash by Avril Lavigne who scored a double whammy with best solo act and most addictive track for Girlfriend.
And despite rumours, Pete Doherty, who performed at the awards with his band Babyshambles, did not team up with Amy for a double act performance.
"We're not doing anything tonight, but we will be doing something in the future," Pete told reporters.
Organisers feared that Pete would not be up to standard at the ceremony after receiving a suspended jail sentence on Monday for a string of drug and motoring offences.
But they were in for a shock - of a good kind.
Following his MTV rehearsal, a backstage source said of Pete:
"He was punctual, behaved professionally and was charming to everyone. We were pleasantly surprised."
