After romping home at the Golden Globes, Ang Lee's tale of a complex relationship between two cowboys has taken the spoils at the British Academy awards.

The prizes for best film, best adapted screenplay and best director went to the movie - while Jake Gyllenhaal bagged the film's fourth award as best supporting actor.

But Brit movie The Constant Gardener, which had led the field with 10 nominations, missed out on every major prize and ended up with just one award for best editing.

Best supporting actress Thandie NewtonStars Rachel Weisz and Ralph Fiennes had their limelight stolen by the Americans.

Preggers Rachel was expected to add to her Golden Globe and Sag stash with a statue for best actress, but Walk The Line's Reese Witherspoon swiped the gong.

And in the best actor category, Philip Seymour Hoffman's leading role in Capote earned him a bit of glitter for his mantelpiece.

George Clooney was, sadly, another loser of the night, missing out on every one of his four nominations - best director and screenplay for Good Night, And Good Luck, and two best supporting actor nods for Good Night and Syriana.

Flying the British flag, Thandie Newton, in fine pink frills, took the best supporting actress accolade for Crash, and James McAvoy beat the likes of Michelle Williams and Rachel McAdams to take the Orange rising star award.

Oh, and a certain northern bloke and his dog proved a surprise winner in the Orange British film of the year category.

Well done, Wallace And Gromit: The Curse Of The Were-Rabbit for pipping The Constant Gardener and Pride And Prejudice to the post.
