Take a break from Christmas shopping to nip into the cinema.
But first, allow Tim Evans to advise you on what to watch.
ERAGON
Certificate: PG Running time: 104m
What's it about? Farm boy Eragon (newcomer Ed Speleers) is literally plucked from obscurity to ride atop a writhing dragon against the dark forces of John Malkovich's evil King Galbatorix.
What's good? It looks good - all alpine vistas and swooping dragons - while the panto campery of Malkovich and Jeremy Irons as Eragon's mentor raise a titter.
What's bad? Speleers should be sent back to obscurity, the plot is a lame rip-off of Lord Of The Rings and Star Wars, while there's not so much a plot as an accountant's spreadsheet.
Worth a look? For undemanding anklebiters only. Avoid if you're averse to cynical attempts to capture the Potter/ LOTR market.

DEJA VU
Certificate: 12 Running time: 126m
What's it about? Denzel Washington hops into a time machine to rewind four days and alter a terrible course of history that results in a terrorist attack on a New Orleans ferry.
What's good? As with all of Tony Scott's films, it looks good and the action set pieces - particularly the exploding ferry - are adroitly handled.
What's bad? It's a jingoistically rank, nay offensive, piece of neo-con wish-fulfilment from the American right's favourite Geordie. It's also arrant nonsense.
Worth a look? If you're the sort of pimply youth impressed by banks of LCD screens, women's corpses and heavy weaponry, then yes.

BLACK CHRISTMAS
Certificate: 15 Running time: 84m
What's it about? A group of girlies holed up in a sorority house over Christmas attract the attentions of escaped serial killer Billy, a chap who used cookie cutters on his dead mum's flesh.
What's good? It's effective in a workmanlike sort of a way, the gals give it their all and the blood flows like eggnog.
What's bad? The plot staggers along with the film-makers - the people behind the witty Final Destination series - reluctant to let the viewers use their imagination.
Worth a look? If it's your bag. Better still, dig out the 1974 original - a genuine spine-shredder with Olivia Hussey and Margot Kidder.
