Catherine Zeta Jones and Hugh JackmanCatherine Zeta Jones and Hugh JackmanCatherine Zeta Jones and Hugh Jackman embody beauty in the 21st Century, according to a study by plastic surgeons.

But what passes as beautiful has changed through the generations, says the survey by the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS).

The surgeons were asked to look at pictures of celebrities from the 1960s to the present day, to see how attitudes towards beauty have changed.

"While beauty is always in the eye of the beholder, this survey shows how facial attractiveness transcends through time," said Dr Steven Pearlman, president of the AAFPRS.

Elizabeth Taylor and Paul NewmanElizabeth Taylor and Paul NewmanIn the 1960s, in the era of free love, wide eyes were in. Legendary screen star Elizabeth Taylor, with her porcelain skin and well-proportioned eyes, won the most votes for the decade, with 38%.

In the male category Paul Newman got 42% of the votes for his well defined eyes and lips.

In the current decade the face of beauty is Catherine Zeta Jones, the surgeons decided. Zeta Jones got 31% and Hugh Jackman 26% of the votes.

Charlize Theron won 23% while Lucy Liu got just 1%. In the male category, Irish heart-throb Colin Farrell got 21%, just behind Jackman.

Justin Timberlake got just 3% - although girlfriend Cameron Diaz may disagree.

"Zeta Jones has a short delicate jaw with small chin and nose, all of which are desirable for an attractive female face," said Dr Pearlman."

The surgeons agreed that the bone structure of the face determined attractiveness.

They said a well-proportioned face should be divided into equal thirds, with horizontal lines drawn hrough the hairline, the brow, the base of the nose, and the edge of the chin.
