Alex Curran Alex Curran Hair extensions, manicures, lunches at The Ivy...

These are all luxuries for a modern day lass.

But for your average Wag woman like Alex Curran, they're somewhat seen as essentials.

Until now, that is. It seems the credit crunch has slowed the cash flow, and the footballers' wives are cutting back.

Alex says that the recession has made her more conscious of spending money, and she's starting to tighten the purse strings.

"I've never bought labels for the sake of it," she told Closer magazine. "I buy as many clothes in Topshop and All Saints as I do designer. And I won't buy an item if I don't think it's worth the money."

She also says that despite the material possessions people may generally associate with Wags, she's not a diva.

"I get my hair done twice a week, but I'm not that bothered about pampering," she insists. "I do my nails myself – the nail varnish I'm wearing was only £2 from a bargain bin."

Alex believes that her new wise views on spending are echoed throughout the Wag community and beyond.

"I think people – especially Wags – are becoming more conscious of spending money now," she said.

So does that mean we'll be seeing you down Poundland then, Alex?
