But word on the street has it that Britney Spears has gone en vacances...

And her getaway pal is unexpected to say the least.

It's none other than 52-year-old Mel Gibson.

Yup, rumour has it that Brit has accompanied Mel and his wife on a beach break in Costa Rica.

An inside source told People: "There are no expectations, there is no agenda. It's simply an act of human kindness - one neighbour reaching out to the other." Mel Gibson

It's difficult to envisage the trio kicking back in their flip-flops and sarongs together, but don't forget Brit's been spotted getting pally with Mel before.

The unlikely duo were seen taking in a bit of lunch along with some of Brit's friends in Studio City a while back.

So we're taking this as a happy extension of the blossoming mateship.
