Kate Winslet failed to convert either of her best actress nominations to a win at the Baftas and was absent when Imelda Staunton pipped her to the post for her role in abortionist drama Vera Drake.
But the biggest cheer of the night on the red carpet went to Clive Owen, who won best supporting actor for Closer - definitely the people's favourite.
