But Cheryl Cole defied every cynic last night, delivering a sensational X Factor performance of her new solo single that left everyone whooping for more.
Dressed in a sexy military-inspired outfit, Cheryl swapped her judging seat for the stage, acting out a high energy dance routine for her new tune Fight For This Love.
The result moved even acid-tongued Simon Cowell to gushing praise.
"That was incredible," he enthused. "I'd take you in my category any day."
He also predicted a number one for Cheryl next week. That means she'll be up against her own 2008 X Factor act Alexandra Burke, who stormed to the top of the charts yesterday with Bad Boys, featuring Flo Rida.
Meanwhile, all-time diva Whitney Houston made her comeback on the show, but was hampered by a wardrobe malfunction when her dress strap broke during her performance of Million Dollar Bill.
