Angelina JolieAngelina Jolie has enviable browsIt’s amazing the difference well-groomed brows can make to your face, but tweaking them to suit your features can be trickier than you’d think.

Whether you’re a DIY woman, a salon junkie or a first timer, here's our definitive guide to beautiful brows.

The shape
Your ideal brow shape depends on the shape of your face, and your nose and cheekbones too. Angular faces look better with a rounded brow, whereas round and oval faces suit more of an arched look.

For each eye, hold a pencil vertically from the centre of your nostril to your right brow, in line with the inner corner of your eyes to see where it should begin, then diagonally past the outer corner of your eye for where it should end. The shape should curve slightly down as it thins out to frame the eye.

If you’re still unsure Benefit offers a fantastic in-store consultation at their nationwide brow-bars (www.benefitcosmetics.co.uk ).

Get plucked
For the best results, invest in a good pair of tweezers - we recommend slant pluckers from Tweezerman. To make it as painless as possible, tweeze after a bath when your pores are opened up or by pressing a hot face cloth on the area first.

Begin by combing your brows through with a brow comb or even an old toothbrush, then slowly pluck the hairs from underneath your natural brow line in the direction they grow. Tweeze a few hairs from one brow then the other, and take regular steps back to check they're symmetrical.

Remove individual hairs - not clumps all at once. You’ll be surprised how much impact just removing a few stray hairs can actually make.

Say it with stencils
Eyebrow specialists Shavata have a great selection of eyebrow stencils to choose from in a fab kit, including four brow designs which help you create the perfect arch by shading inside the stencil or tweezing around it. Eylure have a similar grooming kit packed with stencils, pencils, comb and fixing wax.

Waxing: Home vs salon
Waxed brows can look smoother and better defined and also tend to last longer than plucking. Getting a professional to do it for you is advisable to minimise the pain and they’ll also be able to shape your brows with better precision.

Threading
Threading achieves the neatest brow shape for bushy brows and is pretty quick (though sometimes painful) with slow regrowth. It involves an expert using a length of twisted cotton to catch and pull out the hairs from the root.

The result is beautiful, clean, natural looking brows, which often last longer than waxing and give a much sharper line than any other form of hair removal.

Our tip is to shop around – there are some independent salons with amazing rates. Benito Brow Bar has the largest number of threading concessions in the UK. To find your nearest salon go to www.benitobrowbar.com.

Grooming and finishing
To give brows more definition, gently fill them in using a brow pencil or apply powder with a good angled brow brush. Choose a shade as near to your natural brow colour as possible – then gently apply in the direction of your hairs with tiny, light strokes.

Most beauty brands offer mini brow grooming kits which are really handy and includes mini tweezers, comb, brush and colour. Our favourites are the Brow Kit from Bobbi Brown (£24.47). and the cute-as-can-be Brow Zings from Benefit (21.50).

And, finally, to hold brows in place and give them that sleek, polished look, apply a small amount of wax or use a specialist product such as MAC’s Brow Finisher (£9.79).

So, there you have it: gorgeous brows for everyone.
