Many of Hollywood's leading stars were verging on tears at the Oscars...
As Heath Ledger was named best supporting actor.
The star, who died last year at the age of 28, was awarded the gong for his role as The Joker in The Dark Knight.
The emotion in the 81st Academy Awards auditorium was palpable, as Heath's family arrived on stage to collect the Oscar on his behalf.
Heath's dad Kim, his mum Sally Bell and his sister Kate, who had flown over from his home town of Perth especially for the occasion, shared the acceptance speech between them.
"This is ever so humbling," Kim announced, noting that the award symbolised Heath's "quiet determination to be truly accepted by you all here within an industry he loved".
As he spoke, camera close-ups showed several stars in the audience becoming teary-eyed at the poignant juncture in the ceremony.
Heath's sister Kate added that the Oscar was cause to celebrate his life, saying "we proudly accept this award on behalf of your beautiful daughter Matilda".
Heath died of an accidental prescription drug overdose in January 2008.
He has already won a Bafta and a Golden Globe for his iconic role in the movie.
