Except finding out it was one of your best mates.
Which is exactly what's happened to The Hills' Audrina Patridge after Lauren supposedly hooked up with Justin Bobby - Audrina's on/off beau.
But the real battle for Lauren isn't with Audrina, it's with Spencer Pratt.
After strongly denying the accusations, Lauren hinted in her MySpace blog that Spencer was behind the rumours.
She wrote: "Hmmmmmm. I wonder who it could be? I'm baffled... what kind of person would enjoy watching blogs and the press tear me apart?"
Spence has now hit back, however, telling Us magazine: "I guess I shouldn't be surprised any more that LC would choose to try and blame something on me.
"Why LC continues to bring me up whenever she gets into trouble is beyond me."
He continued: "That being said, if it is true what she did with Justin, it doesn't surprise me. Anyone who watched Laguna Beach saw her trying to steal someone's boyfriend every week for two years.
"Honestly, I really think she needs to stop blaming someone who wants nothing to do with her for all of the problems she creates."
Whatever the truth is remains unclear, but one thing's for sure - this very public spat has only just begun.
