Sydney Pollack has passed away at the age of 73.

The Academy Award-winning director, who was married with three children, died from cancer this weekend.

He was surrounded by family at the time of his death.

Sydney was a well-respected figure in the film world.

He directed 1985 flick Out Of Africa with Robert Redford and Meryl Streep, which won an Oscar for best picture.

Other famous films he worked on included Tootsie, The Talented Mr Ripley and The Interpreter.

He also co-produced and had a role in Michael Clayton, the legal thriller starring George Clooney and Tilda Swinton.

His latest movie appearance was in Made Of Honour, where he played the role of father to Patrick Dempsey's character.

"Sydney made the world a little better, movies a little better and even dinner a little better," George Clooney said in a statemenet quoted by Variety magazine.

"A tip of the hat to a class act. He'll be missed terribly."
