We'd like to say baby Maddie is the cutest thing we've ever clapped eyes on.

But truth be told, we just can't tell.

The 17-year-old is taking her role of protective mother to extremes as she heads out to the shops in Hollywood - her mini-me shrouded from prying eyes with what looks to be a beach towel.

In fact, you could quite easily be forgiven for thinking the bundle she's carrying is nowt more than a rolled-up piece of cloth.

It's only the careful way that Jamie Lynn is cradling the blanket, and checking inside it every so often (right), that gives us any kind of clue that baby Maddie is indeed within.

With this little to go on, it's a tad difficult to whip up the kinda enthusiasm we had over, say, the Brangelina twin snaps.

We can't really say Maddie has Jamie Lynn's eyes or Britney's lips, because all we can see is a mass of pink and brown material.

And while we can't really blame Jamie Lynn for wanting to avoid the limelight, we do hope to see more of the tot as she grows up.
