She and John Mayer seem like an ideal pairing.

But could it be their relationship is yesterday's news?

The latest word on the block has it that Jen and John are putting the brakes on their short-lived romance.

The couple, who were first seen together this April, are apparently taking some time apart, although they are keen not to portray the move as an official split.

The last we heard from Jen's rep was her issuing a denial about a story that Jen was planning to wed John - but neither she nor John's peeps have commented on this latest split rumour.

However, multiple sources close to the formerly smitten duo have confirmed they're taking a step back - saying that John's solo trip to Mexico recently is just another sign that they're heading in separate directions.

"They had a great time together but they are just in different places in their lives right now," a source tells People.

"He never ends things with a clean slate," the pal is quoted as saying.

"He likes to dwell on these relationships and sort everything out before saying goodbye for good."

Yet another source confirms this angle to Us magazine, saying of Johnifer: "It is really a cooling-off, not this big, dramatic break-up."

Well, if all this goss is on the mark, we have to say it saddens us.

But we'll wait out for something more concrete before pairing Jen up with the next single guy on the block.
