Kiefer Sutherland Kiefer Sutherland at the Manhattan police station 24 actor Kiefer Sutherland has surrendered to the police.

The star, who plays Jack Bauer in hit TV show 24, was arrested on Thursday on charges that he allegedly head-butted a fashion designer at a party in Manhattan, New York.

The New York Police Department has confirmed the news.

A NYPD duty officer told AFP: "He was arrested on a misdemeanor assault charge."

According to reports, Kiefer surrendered himself to a police station in Manhattan, but was not jailed and remains free, prior to a court appearance.

The date of his hearing is not yet known.

Kiefer is accused of allegedly head-butting fashion designer Jack McCullough on Monday evening at a nightclub, following the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute do.

Jack alleges the incident led to cuts on his face. Reports have suggested Kiefer allegedly attacked Jack after he bumped into actress Brooke Shields.

Kiefer is currently on probation for drink driving and spent 48 days in jail after his arrest in 2007.
