Madonna Madonna Madonna has won her legal battle to adopt a second child from Malawi.

The country's highest court granted the superstar the go-ahead for the move, overturning a previous ruling which vetoed it.

It means Madonna can now officially become mum to three-year-old Chifundo James, whose name means "Mercy".

"In our view, Chifundo James is better taken care of by being adopted by foreign parents who will give her love and affection," supreme court Chief Justice Lovemore Munro announced in the 90-minute hearing.

The judge went on to say that Madonna was financially stable and could care for Mercy.

He added that the singer's commitment to the welfare of disadvantaged children in Malawi should also be recognised.

"We therefore grant the adoption," he concluded.Madonna with David and LourdesMadonna with David and Lourdes in 2007

Madonna's request to adopt Mercy was previously blocked by a lower court ruling in Malawi in April, because the 50-year-old failed to meet an 18-month residency requirement demanded by the country's legal system.

However, officials involved in this latest decision said the previous judgement was a narrow interpretation of old laws.

Madonna adopted her son, David Banda, from Malawi in 2006; she also has two other children, Lourdes and Rocco.
