It was never going to be a regular send off for the King of Pop.
But the memorial concert for Michael Jackson was full of emotion and celebration.
With tributes from some of the biggest names in music, his brothers and even his daughter Paris, there wasn't a dry eye in the place.
The singer was taken through LA's Staples Center in a gold-plated casket, so that all 8,750 of the gathered fans could say goodbye in person.
There to celebrate his astonishing music career, fans were treated to performances from the likes of Mariah Carey, Usher, Lionel Richie and Stevie Wonder.
Mariah paid homage to Michael with a rendition of the Jackson Five hit I'll Be There, with which she had a US number one and UK number two back in 1992.
Our LA girl Dionne Clarke was one of the lucky few to get a ticket. She said: "The service has been very spiritual and emotional. It bought people around me to tears.
"The Staples Center is completely packed out with MJ fans and the atmosphere is a mixture of celebration, sadness and reflection.
"Giant screens surround us and his family are sitting in the front row.
Family, fans and the media alike took in the performance, which included a rousing gospel song, Jesus Is Love, from Lionel Richie; a speech by Queen Latifah, including a poem written by Maya Angelou and a eulogy by Berry Gordy.
A fan in the stadium next to Dionne, spoke through his tears, telling her: "I have been a lifelong fan of Michael and I'm distraught. I didn't sleep last night but I'm so excited to be here."
Dionne went on: "It feels such an honour to be here - a part of history."
