Michael Jackson’s physician, Dr Conrad Murray, has issued a statement saying that he neither prescribed nor gave the singer the drugs Demerol or OxyContin.
His lawyer, Edward Chernoff, described how Dr Murray found Michael in bed with a faint pulse, but not breathing, at his home in LA last Thursday.
He said the doctor immediately began CPR, adding that claims that he had earlier administered Jacko with painkillers were "absolutely false".
"He just happened to find him in his bed and he wasn't breathing," the lawyer told the Daily Mirror.
"Mr Jackson was still warm and had a pulse. Dr Murray has never prescribed nor administered Demerol to Michael Jackson. Not ever. Not OxyContin either for that matter."
He also insisted that it was the doctor himself who advised Michael's family to push for a second autopsy on the body.
An initial post-mortem deferred the cause of death for the 50-year-old singer, meaning the medical examiner has ordered more tests.
Meanwhile Michael Jackson's mother, Katherine, has confirmed she will make a bid for custody of Michael's three children - Prince Michael, 12, Paris, 11 and seven-year-old Prince Michael II.
"She will seek custody of the children. She loves them dearly," family attorney Londell McMillan told CNN.
