Robbie Williams has come clean on his previous addiction to prescription drugs.
The 35-year-old star revealed his habit spiralled so out of control, he almost died before seeking help.
The former Take That singer, currently poised for a comeback, entered rehab on his 33rd birthday in February 2007.
"Robbie Williams does not go into rehab just if his life gets a bit out of control. It was damn serious," he told The Sun.
"Death had to knock on my door to help me with my decision."
Lisa D'Amato, who briefly dated the star in late 2006, later claimed he was dependent on anti-depressants at the time of his rehab stint.
Robbie fought the addiction for three years and is now over it, but admits he still fears a relapse.
"I have a self-destructive character but does this hold me back from being happy? No," he said.
Robbie is set to perform at London's Roundhouse in October for the Electric Proms, in what will be his first live performance in three years.
He is also releasing a new single, Bodies, on the 12th October.
