He's just received a top gong from the French.

Jude was awarded for his contribution to cinema with the prestigious Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres medal from the French government yesterday afternoon.

Friends and family looked on as the actor received his medal from French ambassador Gerard Errera at the Residence de France in West London.

A stunned Jude told the crowd: "I am speechless. My mum and dad have lived in France for 15 years so really it is a country I share as my home."

The ambassador joked as he handed Jude his award: "France is a strange country - it has created a special honour for artists, writers, actors, singers and dancers.

Kidding aside, Gerard stated Jude was, "simply one of the most talented actors today".

He said: "Your immense success has not been handed to you on a plate. It has been the product of hard work.

"This honour is not given in recognition of what you have done for France. It is given for what you have done as an actor and what you represent in the world of cinema and in a way maybe more importantly for what you are as a human being."

Jude's father, Peter, also couldn't contain his praise...

He told reporters: "What is significant is that the French have recognised Jude in so many different facets. They seem to have a whole view of him as a man and that is what is so touching."
